These dogs became famous for their rescue work in snowy mountain regions, especially around the Great St. Bernard Pass, where monks used them to help locate and rescue travelers lost in the snow.

Saint Bernards are known for their large size, strength, loyalty, and gentle personality. Despite their massive appearance, they are affectionate, patient, and excellent family companions. They are especially good with children, which has earned them the nickname “gentle giants.”

This breed typically weighs between 120 and 180 pounds and can stand up to 30 inches tall at the shoulder. Saint Bernards can have either short or long coats, usually in white with red, brown, or brindle markings. Regular grooming is important, especially for long-haired varieties.

Saint Bernards are intelligent and eager to please, but they can also be stubborn at times. Early training and socialization are highly recommended due to their size and strength. They do best with calm, consistent training and plenty of positive reinforcement.

Because of their thick coat and large body size, Saint Bernards prefer cooler climates and may struggle in extreme heat. They also require moderate daily exercise to stay healthy, though they are generally less energetic than many other large breeds.

Common health concerns for the breed include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and bloating. Responsible breeding, proper nutrition, and regular veterinary care are important for maintaining their health and well-being.

Overall, the Saint Bernard is a loving, dependable, and protective breed that thrives in a family environment and forms strong bonds with its owners.

SAINT BERNARD 2756 GIRL The Saint Bernard is a giant working dog breed originally developed in the Swiss Alps and northern Italy.
